Tube and Overground delays and cancellations as snow hits Balham. 1 December 2010
People have been having the most awful journeys to work from Balham today, both on Southern Rail and even the underground due to a signal failure at Clapham South. Stefan got turfed off his underground at Balham and had to get a bus to catch up with the tube network at Stockwell. "This is a nightmare" he said "no tubes, or trains - we haven't even had that much snow!". On Twitter everyone was complaining. DJMarland wrote "What the f*** public transport? Literally trapped in Balham with now way to work!! @Joem2go tweeted "ended up walking to Clapham Junction as Balham trains were non existent."
Southern Rail issued this alert this morning:
As there has been more snowfall overnight, there is a possibility that some members of train crew may have difficulty in arriving at their depots to staff trains. Given the on-going weather conditions, please be prepared for short notice alterations, cancellations and delays today.
Service Summary
Services are being delayed by up to 90 minutes this morning
The earlier failed train at Gatwick has now been moved and services are now able to run through to London again on the Brighton Mainline.
As Gatwick Airport is closed and unable to accommodate more passengers at this time we have agreed to suspend Gatwick Express services from 10am until further notice.
Signalling problems mean we are unable to run services between Redhill and Reigate.
The East Grinstead line is currently suffering delays due to ice on the conductor rail.
We are running shuttle services between Tattenham Corner and Purley and Caterham and Purley. The shuttle service will depart Tattenham Corner at 32 minutes past the hour, with the return service departing Purley at 02 minutes past the hour. The Caterham service will depart Caterham at 52 minutes past the hour, with the return service departing Purley at 22 minutes past the hour. This may also be subject to delays.
To enable us to strenghten these services on the Caterham and Tattenham lines, we are currently not stopping at Purley Oaks and South Croydon. South Croydon customers are advised to use TfL buses, and passengers to and for Purley Oaks should use Sanderstead station.
Meanwhile, Metro services are running with delays of up to 40 minutes.
South West Trains, Southeastern, First Capital Connect, London Underground, TfL buses and London Tramlink are accepting Southern tickets on all reasonable routes.
