Summer of Sport on Tooting Common!

We're lucky in Balham to be surrounded by 3 fantastic open spaces. Tooting Common, Clapham Common and Streatham Common. They're enjoyed by every age and gender and Londoners love to get outdoors and enjoy the Commons like they are their own back yard!

There's no better way to spend an afternoon, playing sport and all for free. Jogging, Tennis and Boot Camps aside, families and groups of friends can spend a good few hours playing sport together without the need for an organised club event. But if your school day memories of how to play rounders are a bit patchy, here are some ideas about other simple games you can play to make best use of the wide open spaces, like mini cricket!
McCain have a promotion this summer where you can win a garden game set. They've got 100 to give away every day for the whole summer and Sally Gunnell here demonstrates different games you can play in the outdoors. Well, even if you don't win a garden game set, you could pinch the game ideas!
How about our old friend the frisbee! Here's a site with more things to do with a frisbee than you can shake a stick at! Even a skipping rope will keep everyone amused for hours. Believe me, I've done it! What about setting a group of kids up with a simple pedometer and challenge them to get the most steps over a period of time. Honestly it will keep them amused and engaged for a good while. Time for a coffee!

If you would like to try a different sport this summer, why not try korfball? It's the worlds only mixed team ball sport. PlayKorfball.com are running free sessions over the summer on Monday evenings on Tooting Bec Common. Visit http://tinyurl.com/3sspuyu for more information.

ReportYeah, you're right. Wandsworth Common is nearer but an important part of Balham is in Lambeth and Streatham Common is part of their 'hood'!

ReportI think you've missed a couple.
Tooting Common is actually two commons - Tooting Bec Common and Tooting Graveney Common.
But, more importantly, Wandsworth Common is surely closer than Clapham Common or Streatham Common. It is, after all where a lot of the action in The Waiting Room is set :-)
