Locally I’ve been contacted by dozens of residents who are dismayed at Wandsworth council’s plans to spend £13 million of our money on a new school on the old Bolingbroke Hospital site, when there are places available at existing schools in Wandsworth, all of which are in desperate need of investment and improvements. Many feel that the new school (which is being built as part of the government’s ‘free school’ programme) will be ‘exclusive’ due to the area it’s located in and the planned admission criteria – I’d be interested to hear your views on this.

Email Sadiq, or write: Sadiq Kahn, House of Commons, SW1A 0AA or visit 273 Balham HIgh Road, London, SW17 7BD.

Although it is outside the Balham area, it is worth noting that, while the Council have £13,000,000 to buy the Bolingbroke Hospital and have talked about buy the disused Putney Hospital building as well, they are also planning to close the York Gardens Library which serves the most deprived part of the borough.

To justify this they are using the cost per adult book lending. Their own Equalities Impact Assessment indicates that this is precisely the library which should be kept open.

Will they justify themselves if educational standards drop in the York Gardens area and crime rises? At the moment, the library is one of the only lifelines for the children. Falconbrook school, excluded from the Bolingbroke catchment area, is another.
