Shakespeare’s green-eyed monster to stalk Balham
With its themes of obsessive Jealousy and domestic abuse, contrasted with the Spring sunshine of teenage love, the latest production from award-winning Southside theatre group could be a gritty TV drama.
Instead, it’s The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare – set in the austere, rationed, ultra-conventional world of post-war Britain.
The Winter's Tale transcends time and space, based as it is on eternal themes of love, jealousy, friendship and reconciliation. Spanning sixteen years, it shows how negative emotions can destroy relationships and a way of life – but ending with the redemptive hope for a new beginning.
A ‘fantastical’ drama combining all Shakespeare’s skills of language and humour (a ‘tragi-comedy’) with his peerless human insight.
