Sadly, a young man lost his life today in the grounds of Clapham Park Estate, on Poynders Road on Clapham boarders.

Dave McEvoy,Chair of the Residents Association (WERA) for the Weir Estate, nearby in Balham, was shocked to hear of the fatal shooting incident on Poynders Road but writes 'thankfully an isolated incident in this area'.

Since February, this area - Thornton Ward - has been serviced by a new Met Police initiative called Project Hannah which has given policing in this area a boost by enhancing neighbourhood policing as well as maintaining emergency response capability.  These teams are referred to as LPT (local Police Teams); this in in addition to working alongside the SNT's  (Safer Neightbourhood Teams).

According to the Weir Estate website, this area "continues to have some the lowest reported crimes in the borough", so this incident today, whilst not on the Weir Estate, nor in Balham itself, is a rarity.

None the less, it is a bit close for comfort.  Met Officers from Operation Trident are on the scene according to the News Teams at London Tonight.

Tweeters are able to flesh out some of the detail of the incident.  @MelissaErasia writes .."victim was a 19 year old male from Brixton Hill.  Goes  by the nickname of "Ziggy". @_BigEasy writes "RIP to the brother that go shot in the head in Poynders earlier today". And as the news spreads virally, @amarislove  writes ";-O no way not the ziggy that i know ??? NO WAY!

As you said, just because it's an isolated incident does not mean it's not worrying. I wonder why he was shot.
