Lorry crashes into Balham railway bridge

A cherry picker crane became wedged under Balham rail bridge on Bedford Hill this morning causing school run traffic chaos.

Laura Hadfield @Hadders808 was underneath the bridge at the time and later posted the above photo on twitter with the comment "This lorry did not make it under Balham bridge it crashed as I was underneath! Scared the **** out of me!"

Despite clear signage on the bridge showing a height limit of 3.7m the driver obviously didn't know how high his vehicle was and tried (unsuccessfully) to drive underneath.

Bad day for accidents - also one near Clapham Common - traffic tailing back into Balham. Maybe the lorry was diverted under the bridge?
