The Balham Partnership and Wandsworth Council have won grant funding amounting to £1.9 million to help "clean up a few scruffy corners" of Balham town centre.

Just under £1.5 million of the money will come from Boris Johnson's Outer London Fund which was set up to help liven up the town centres of Outer London. Local businesses and Wandsworth Council are also providing some match funding.

Balham's money will go towards:

- Town centre publicity campaigns to drive up local trade

- Improvements to the railway bridge over Balham High Road

- 'Legible London ' signs to help people find their way around the town centre on foot

- Pedestrian improvements to Hildreth Street

- Improvements to the Balham community space

- Upgrades to the Post Office forecourt on Balham High Road

- Public artwork on "the ugly wall"

- A programme of cultural and business events

Wandsworth Council's regeneration spokesman Cllr James Cousins said: "This is great news for Balham. The cash will help us clean up a few scruffy corners and really enhance the main shopping area. The town centre has made terrific progress in recent years and we now have the funding to go a step further."
