A Balham man whose children inspired him to write a series of books about the adventures of a London pigeon has seen his venture lift off the ground.
Author Roger de Kassel
Roger de Kassel, 51, wrote his first illustrated book about 'Mr P' the pigeon last year. Each book aims to teach children about moral and environmental issues.
Mr de Kassel, who grew up on Fernlea Road, said: "I started making up stories with my daughters and they used to ask me questions about things. I wanted them to teach them how to behave around the streets and everyday life."
The author, who also works in recruitment, had his first illustrated book published last year.
He said: "My oldest daughter wrote down 'Mr P and the Silver Red Bag' after I told it to her five or six times and convinced me to do a book. That's how it came about, me making up stories.
"It's always been about how we treat people and how we live our lives in society and the environment we're in."
Mr de Kassel has three further books due to be published before the end of the year. The most important, he says, will be 'Mr P and the Red Poppy', which aims to highlight the importance of Remembrance Sunday.
"A lot of kids don't really know why we commemorate this day. Even teenagers," he added.
The author had his first illustrated book published last year. Mr P and the Silver Red Bag raises awareness of litter and was inspired to write it after seeing rubbish in his local park.
"It is sad and it is constant," said Mr de Kassel, who also works in recruitment. "We are a society where we expect others to do it for us and that's very sad.
"I was in my local park. It was a lovely sunny day and there was little scattered across the park.
"You look at it and think 'what an eyesore'. Why can't people just pick it up and put it in the bin?"
