Forget Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park or Somerset House for ice skating. Streatham and Brixton are the places to skate this winter. Streatham Ice Arena will be closing its doors on 18 December to make way for the build of the long awaited Streatham Hub project which should reopen to skaters in Streatham in around 23 months time. In the meantime, a temporary ice rink has been built at Brixton for all South London ice enthusiasts to continue with their skating pleasure. There's been a long skating tradition in Streatham going back 80 years! The Ice Rink was opened on 26 February 1931 in a building designed by Robert Cromie, a renowned designer of cinemas in the 1930's. Three thousand people attended the opening. The headline in the local paper was "Don't go to Switzerland : Come to Streatham".

By way of celebration and of saying goodbuy to one of South London's most famous landmarks, a party is planned on 18 December from 4pm - 8pm at Streatham Ice Arena. They'll be ice dancing shows, stick and puc sessions and maybe even a famous face or two.
Tickets are on sale shortly and will be £7.50 a pop. You can even rock up on the day and get some. Read more fascinating facts about our local ice rink here. Read here and here some wonderful memories from people who have used the ice rink over the years.
