It's easy to understand why the most popular New Year's resolution is to get fitter and healthier.  After the excesses of the festive season we are all feeling less than lithe and energetic.  With 2012 being Olympic year here in London what better inspiration to get us out and about in Balham and bring out the athlete in all of us!

Of course we're not all sporty types but that doesn't mean we can't live a little healthier and with all that is on offer in Balham there is no excuse to stay indoors and veg.

… and starting with veg … there is no use starting an exercise routine without considering diet too.  Even those with busy lifestyles can spare a little time to get down to Hildreth Street Market and really be inspired to buy some lovely fresh fruit and veg.  Much more appealing than plastic wrapped supermarket fare and you are more likely to pick up something you've never tried before.  The more love and effort you put into preparing your healthy meals makes them all the more tasty and rewarding (just ask Dr Gillian!)

Now to the exercise … Balham Leisure Centre offers swimming, gym and all sorts of martial arts and exercise classes for all levels of experience.  They have some special offers on membership for 2012: to register for membership offers text "Balham + offers" to 81025 call  020 8772 9577.

If you really need some help shedding a few ounces (sounds easier than pounds!) then there is a slimming world group in Balham every Monday.  Lisa who runs the group has a facebook page and you can see what's going on here: http://www.facebook.com/lisa.slimmingworld or call her on 07834491342.

Alvin Kofi (Kofi Arts) who runs classes in Chi Gong and Yoga is offering a special introductory class on Managing Your Health at Balham and Tooting Social Club on 4 January.  Mei Quan Academy of Taiji also offer classes in Tai Chi and Qi Gong at Alderbrook Primary School in Balham. Balhampeople member Anyayoga is offering a detox yoga workshop on 14 January 2012 which sounds a great way to start off the New Year on the right foot.  A great combination of healthy mind and healthy body!

If you have little ones in tow don't let that put you off finding a way of getting fit for 2012.  Buggyfit Wandsworth and Tooting have a great way for you to get out for some exercise with other buggy pushers!  They meet at Tooting Common and are offering 15% of all block bookings until the end of February.  You can find out more on the facebook page here.

If you would like to share details of fitness and exercise classes or tips on healthy eating why not comment below.  If you run a class then don't forget you can add your business and events to our directory and what's on sections right here on balhampeople.co.uk.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy Olympic Year here in Balham!
